Choose a Better Clean

We talk a lot about moisturising. But what about cleansing?

If your skin feels tight after a shower, looks dull by mid-day, or seems dry no matter how much cream you apply, the issue may not be your moisturiser. It could be your soap.

Cleansing is the first step in body care. And if that first step is too harsh, everything that follows has to work harder.

Why some soaps leave skin feeling dry

Your skin has a natural protective barrier made up of oils and moisture. Some cleansers — especially highly alkaline or strongly fragranced ones — can remove more than just dirt. They can strip away some of that natural protection.

When this happens, you might notice:

  • Tightness after washing
  • Flaky patches
  • Increased sensitivity
  • A rough texture

That “squeaky clean” feeling isn’t actually a good sign.

How to choose a gentler body cleanser

A good beauty soap should cleanse effectively without leaving your skin feeling uncomfortable. When choosing one, consider these tips:

Look for humectants like glycerin.
Glycerin helps attract moisture to the skin and supports hydration during cleansing.

Choose soaps with nourishing fats or butters.
Ingredients such as shea butter and cocoa butter help soften skin and reduce that stripped feeling after washing.

Avoid overly harsh formulas.
If your skin feels tight immediately after rinsing, the formula may be too strong for daily use.

Think daily use.
Your cleanser should be something your skin can tolerate every day, not something you need to “recover” from.

Build from the foundation

Healthy-looking skin starts in the shower (or bath). Once you’ve chosen a cleanser that respects your skin barrier, follow up with a moisturiser, especially one rich in emollients like shea butter, lanolin and glycerin.

Sometimes better skin isn’t about adding more. It’s about starting with the right base and preventing moisture loss from the outset.
