Pack Size:

1g vial + an ampoule of 10ml sterilized water

Composition:

Each vial contains:

  • Ceftriaxone Sodium USP (Sterile) equivalent to Anhydrous Ceftriaxone 1000mg.
  • One ampoule of Sterilized Water for Injection BP 10ml.

Indications:

Shalbactam injection is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Lower respiratory tract infection
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Pneumonia
  • Bacterial meningitis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Skin and skin structure infections
  • Septicemia
  • Surgical prophylaxis
  • Bacteremia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Intra-abdominal infection
  • Urinary tract infections.

Dosage:

  • Lower respiratory tract infection: 1g to 2g Max.: 4g/day. IV / IM Once a day or in two equally divided doses.
  • Upper respiratory tract infection: 1g to 2g Max.: 4g/day. IV / IM Once a day or in two equally divided doses.
  • Pneumonia or Meningitis: 500mg – 1g. IV / IM Every 8hours. Adult: Initially 4g followed by 2g for 10 days or 72hours. Max: 4g daily. IV Once a day.
  • Children: Initially 100mg/Kg (not to exceed 4 grams). Thereafter a total daily dose of 100mg/Kg/day (not to exceed 4g daily) is recommended. Days: For 7 to 14 days. Once a day or in equally divided doses every 12hours.
  • Pelvic inflammatory diseases: 1-2g. IV/IM Every 8hours.
  • Skin and soft Tissue infections: Children 50 to 75mg/kg Max: 2g/day. Once a day (or in equally divided doses twice a day).
  • Septicemia / Bacteremia:
    • Adult 1 to 2g Max. 4g/day. IV/IM Once a day.
    • Children: 50-75mg/kg Max. 2g/day. Once or in two divided dose.
  • Surgical prophylaxis: Single dose of 1g half to 2 hours before surgery. IV Single dose.
  • Bone and joint infections: 1 to 2g Max: 4g/day. IV Every 12 hours.
  • Intra-abdominal and urinary tract infections: 1 to 2g Max: 4g/day. Once a day or in equally divided doses twice a day.

Side Effects:

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The common side effects associated with Shalbactam are local reactions like pain, induration and tenderness, phlebitis, eosinophilia, thrombocytosis, leukopenia, diarrhoea, rash and elevations of SGOT/AST or SGPT/ALT.
