So, you have Normal Skin

normal skin type

You’ve found out that you have normal skin. This is a common skin type and mostly easy to maintain, so we’ve put together some useful information to help you care for it.

What exactly is Normal Skin?

‘Normal skin’ is a term used to refer to well-balanced skin. The scientific term for well-balanced skin is eudermic. In other words, your skin makes the right amount of sebum (the oil that moisturizes and protects skin). This keeps it well-hydrated and is therefore considered balanced.

Signs of Normal Skin

Normal skin, in general, does not exhibit one extreme or another when it comes to its appearance. Below are the signs of normal skin (1):

  • Not too dry and not too oily
  • Zero or few imperfections
  • No severe sensitivity
  • Barely visible pores
  • A radiant complexion
  • Smooth texture

How to care for Normal Skin

  • Cleanse – You should wash your face twice a day, once in the morning, and just before bed. Wet your face and apply a gentle cleanser or soap with your fingertips. Gently massage the cleanser into your skin. Don’t scrub your face. Rinse with plenty of warm water, then pat dry with a clean towel. (2)
  • Moisturize – Apply a moisturizer for Normal Skin type, while your skin is still damp from cleansing. This will help seal in moisture. (3)
  • Protect – Sunscreen is essential, and not just for sunny summer days. You still get plenty of ultraviolet exposure when the sky is overcast. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays. (4)
  • Although not always needed with normal skin, extra skincare products like serums, toners, exfoliants, and prescription treatments should be applied after cleansing but before moisturizing.

Lifestyle habits for skin health

  • Stay hydrated – For optimal skin health, drink plenty of water throughout the day. (5) According to chief dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Harish Koutam, “Lack of water is an alarming condition for your skin. Dehydration leads to increased trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and damages the skin barrier. Barrier damage causes premature aging and other skin issues like frequent acne breakout, extreme dryness, etc.” (6)
  • Get enough quality sleep.
  • Nourish your skin from the inside too. Maintain good skin health by eating healthy, fresh and nutrient-rich food. For more inspiration, have a look at our article on “Four Foods for Fabulous Skin”.

In conclusion, skincare for normal skin does not need to be complicated, but it must be consistent. You can adjust your products according to your skin’s needs, and if in doubt, consult a dermatologist, a doctor who specializes in skin.
