Symptoms

Bloating

  • Bloating is the feeling of pressure, fullness or tightness in the abdomen, which occurs due to the buildup of gas in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Common symptoms are feeling full, as well as a tight, hard or distended (swollen) abdomen, and sometimes pain.
  • The causes of bloating are eating too much and too fast, indigestion, heartburn, peptic ulcer and gastroesophageal disease.
  • You can treat bloating with lifestyle changes, the use of peppermint oil and over-the-counter antacids like Polygel Syrup.

Acid indigestion

  • Acid indigestion is also known as upset stomach or dyspepsia, which causes discomfort in the upper abdomen.
  • The common complaints are pain or a burning feeling in the upper abdomen. Additionally, complaints include bloating, feeling full too soon after eating, burping, nausea and gas.
  • In general, common causes are drinking too much alcohol, carbonated beverages, coffee, eating too fast or too much, spicy food, junk food, stress and smoking.

Heartburn

  • Heartburn is the burning pain in the chest, behind the breast bone. It can last from a few minutes to a few hours.
  • It is the chief symptom of a gastric problem called gastric reflux.
  • Heartburn worsens after eating, in the evening or when lying on the bed.
  • Furthermore, it can also lead to a bitter or acidic taste in the mouth.
  • Manage heartburn with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter antacid preparations.
  • Polygel Syrup is such an antacid.

Gastroesophageal reflux

  • Gastroesophageal reflux is commonly known as GERD.
  • It occurs when acid/food in the stomach flows back (reflux) into the oesophagus (food pipe).
  • The most common complaints of GERD are heartburn and regurgitation (entry of stomach content in the mouth causing bitter taste).
  • Interestingly, it can occur at any age, and people with asthma have higher chances of developing GERD.
  • Manage GERD with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medicines like Polygel Syrup antacid.

Peptic Ulcer

  • A peptic ulcer is the formation of sores in the stomach, small intestine and oesophagus (food pipe).
  • There are three types, namely:
    1. Gastric ulcer – an ulcer in the stomach.
    2. Oesophagal ulcer – i.e. in the food pipe.
    3. Duodenal ulcer – an ulcer in the first part of the small intestine which attaches to the stomach.
  • The most common causes are Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria and long-term use of pain-relieving medicines.
  • Complaints are burning stomach pain between meals or at night and a feeling of fullness, bloating, heartburn, nausea, and fatty food intolerance.
  • Treatment involves using antibacterial agents to kill the pylori, acid suppressants and antacids, e.g. Polygel Syrup.
