Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic disease that affects up to 20% of the population and accounts for around 5% of a primary-care health professional’s workload. Physicians are not always aware of the total burden of illness of patients who consult them with reflux symptoms. A research study showed that physicians tend to underestimate the prevalence and severity of such symptoms.
A better understanding of how GERD affects many aspects of patients’ lives may aid in managing patients in primary care. In this panel discussion, the experts discuss the current understanding of GERD and its diagnosis, management, and impact on quality of life from the primary care perspective.
