While Duarte da Conceição works for Shalina, Shalina also works for him. He calls the impact affordable medicine is making on Angolan communities huge.
Conceição began working at Shalina in 2001 and is now the Marketing Manager for North Zone.
“I am happy that I am part of what the company has done for the country and for the Angolan people,” Conceição said.
Meanwhile, he says there are ways Shalina has given back to him. He was able to afford a college education and plans to finish his Sales and Marketing MBA. The degree could one day help him start a business.
“I can see myself starting my own business in the future and becoming part of the Shalina supply chain,” Conceição said.
Today, Shalina is the largest provider of essential medicines at affordable prices in Angola. They have founded a series of local depots to reach hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s). Shalina also hopes to form a new manufacturing centre in Angola.
Shalina produces over 200 products, and is certified with the World Health Organization and Good Manufacturing Practices – both internationally recognized standards of manufacturing.
The company aims to work with the Ministry of Health to combat the issue of counterfeit medication in Africa.
Their involvement with the Angolan community has lowered infant and adult mortality rates due to an increased presence of analgesics and antibiotics.
